        A native of Dallas, Texas, Captain Gary Darby initiated his military career as a Midshipman when he enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in July 2003.  He attended the United States Naval Academy for four years, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

        Captain Darby graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 2007, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. After graduation from The Basic School and the Infantry Officer’s Course in Quantico, Virginia, he attended the Light Armored Vehicle Leader’s Course and was assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California.  From June 2008 to April 2009, Captain Darby served as Weapons Platoon Commander in Company B.  As Weapons Platoon Commander, he participated in combat operations in Iraq in support of OIF 08-2 and OIF 09-1. From May 2009 to October 2009, he served as a LAV-25 Platoon Commander in Company E.  From November 2009 to January 2011, Captain Darby served as Executive Officer, Company E.  As Executive Officer for Company E, he participated in combat operations in Afghanistan in support of OEF.  

        In May 2011, Captain Darby reported to the United States Naval Academy for assignment to the company officer LEAD program.  From June 2011 to May 2012 Captain Darby attended the University of Maryland as a graduate student.  In May 2012, Captain Darby graduated from the University of Maryland with a Masters of Professional Studies in Leadership, Education, and Development.

        Currently, Captain Darby is the 23rd Company Officer at the United States Naval Academy and is responsible for teaching, coaching, and mentoring future Naval and Marine Corps officers as they develop morally, mentally, and physically.

        Captain Darby is married to the former Heather Chiarizia from Laurel, Maryland. They have two sons, Caleb and Luke.  His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with Combat Distinguishing Device) and the Combat Action Ribbon.
